The Watch Of The Future
Friday, October 9th, 2009Many individuals purchase fashion items that are for their own gender, which is rightfully so. There are certain items which are specifically made for either gender. But when it comes to watches there are very few gender nonspecific models. But watches of any kind can be used to accessorize any outfit a person can wear to any party or formal social gathering.
Still, old habits die hard, and because we think of watches as fashion accessories and we still think of fashion along gender lines, there is an abundance of men's and ladies watches for every example of a unisex timepiece. But why shouldn't watches simply be the functional pieces of equipment that they are? Has anyone ever thought of men's and women's pocket calculators? Okay, so no one wears pocket calculators anymore, but this raises another interesting point: will watches one day go the way of pocket calculators? After all, time is all around us now, from our cell phones to our portable music players (which are often one and the same device, anyway), who actually needs a watch anymore? It may be that watches, whether for men or women, will one day be relegated to outdoors equipment for adventurers " and even then only those who want to do things the old-fashioned way!
Indeed, the latest electronic gadgetry in modern wristwatches offers built-in television and radio tuners somehow crammed into the tiny form factor of a traditional wristwatch, which devices also pull duty as music-playing camera phones " with expandable memory! Such models are unisex, and almost necessarily so. Ironically, it would not make sense to speak of men's watches or ladies watches when it comes to something that's practical and, most importantly, actually meant to be used. After all, the typical watch for men and women has become a fashion accessory first and foremost.
In the vein, a very fashionable brand name where ladies watches are concerned is Dolce & Gabbana. Their designs can be nicely flamboyant, fun and casual, but never so quirky as to look totally out of place with all but the very strictest of formal evening dresses. The DKNY label is also interesting, typically with a slightly more muted look, but definitely made for ladies that like to have fun. When considering men's watches, however, its an unfortunate truism that any label will do.
As with men's fashion, men's watches tend to be rather uniform in looks, handsome, but emphasizing practical functionality. But for those who want the boldest most innovative designs, look no further than the highly futuristic unisex styles of Tokyo-Flash, particularly their Nekura Scramble and Twelve 5-9 models.
